    What is an Electrical Inspection?

An electrical inspection is a formal check carried out by a registered electrical inspector to confirm that electrical installation work complies with New Zealand electrical safety standards and regulations. Inspections help ensure the installation is safe for use and legally compliant.

When is an Electrical Inspection required?

Electrical inspections are commonly required for:

    • New electrical installations

    • Main switchboard upgrades

    • Solar installations

    • Caravan and motorhome electrical systems

    • Hazardous area installations

    • High-risk prescribed electrical work (PEW)

    • Reconnection after damage or alterations

    • Commercial and industrial electrical systems

What is an ROI (Record of Inspection)?

A Record of Inspection (ROI) is an official document issued by a registered electrical inspector after inspecting high-risk prescribed electrical work. The ROI confirms the installation has been inspected and complies with the Electricity Act and AS/NZS standards.

When do I need a Record of Inspection (ROI)?

An ROI is generally required for high-risk electrical work, including:

  • Men switchboard replacements

  • Mains Earthing system

  • MEN link

  • New mains installations

  • Solar PV systems

  • Caravan and motorhome installations

  • Hazardous locations

  • Certain commercial electrical upgrades

Without an ROI, the installation may not legally be connected or used.

What is a Certificate of Verification (CoV)?

A Certificate of Verification (CoV) confirms that an electrical installation or appliance has been tested and verified as electrically safe. This is commonly required for installation disconnected from power from more than 6 months.

What is the difference between an ROI and a CoV?

  • ROI (Record of Inspection): Issued after inspecting high-risk prescribed electrical work.

  • CoV (Certificate of Verification): Confirms electrical safety and compliance through testing and verification.

Both documents are important but apply to different compliance requirements.

What is an EWOF?

An Electrical Warrant of Fitness (EWOF) is a safety certification required for caravans, campervans, motorhomes, food trailers, and certain movable electrical installations connected to a power supply.

The EWOF confirms the installation complies with AS/NZS 3001 standards and is safe to connect to powered sites.

How long is an EWOF valid for?

In New Zealand, an EWOF is generally valid for up to 4 years, provided the electrical installation remains compliant and unmodified.

Do imported caravans or campervans need an EWOF?

Yes. Imported caravans, campervans, and motorhomes usually require inspection, testing, and certification before an EWOF can be issued in New Zealand.

What happens during an EWOF inspection?

During an EWOF inspection, the inspector checks:

  • RCD protection

  • Earthing and bonding

  • Power inlets and socket outlets

  • Wiring condition

  • Electrical safety testing

  • Compliance with AS/NZS 3001 standards

If compliant, an EWOF sticker and documentation are issued.

What is a Safety Audit?

An electrical safety audit is a detailed assessment of an electrical installation, workplace, or system to identify safety risks, compliance issues, and potential hazards.

Safety audits are commonly used for:

  • Commercial buildings

  • Industrial sites

  • Rental properties

  • hospitality setups

  • Preventive maintenance programmes
